A haiku is a short poem originating in Japan and is written as follows:
*A haiku is written in three lines with a total of 17 syllables
First line = 5 syllables
Second line = 7 syllables
Third line = 5 syllables
Example:
The summer river:
although there is a bridge, my horse
goes through the water.
by Masaoka Shiki
*There are variations;try to get close as you can. As you see,
Shiki used 8 syllables in his second line. *
As Ares has pointed out, the 8 syllables in Shiki's second line is
due to translation from Japanese to English.
And, have fun!

Out in the dark cold,
I ride my white horse, watching
the moon above me...
Look! A carousal.
Colorful horses go up
and down. What great fun.
Clop, clop, clop, clop ... pause, a deep breath, a head shake ... "snort."
Clop, clop, clop, clop, clop.
Monotone memories
startled from reflections in
his faded glass eyes.
He pulls on the bit,
burdened by the heavy weight-
he dreams of freedom.
Love this site.
he came in with grace

and btw.. maybe the reason why the 2nd line had 8 syllables was because it was a translation.. it got me thinking.
Thank you, Ares, regarding the eight syllables being due to a translation. I didn't even think of that :)
P.S. And, thank you, everyone, for visiting my blog. I hope you enjoyed it, and, please contact me if you ever have any photo and or writing ideas.
Please note that for the most part (unless there is a specific question, etc.) I will not be "commenting" on what you write no matter how "good" I think it is. I do not want to judge, in any way, how you write. That is up to you, to develop your own writing style.
Write often!
In the shadow of
his restless dreams, he runs and
hides from watching eyes.
Galloping as if
Somewhere it will go; in truth
It runs in circles
Some good stuff here. I'm so jealous,boo-hoo-hoo :(
