BLACK THUMB
I know it may sound silly...
But I've never grown a lily
I've had begonias, cactus, mums,
And maybe a jillion more,
They've all turned brown and mushy
Outside my kitchen door
So I took off down to WalMart,
To my garden I had a duty,
I returned home proud and smiling
With this one...What a beauty!
I watered it and fed it,
It's doing quite fantastic
I found it in the garden shop,
In the section labeled "Plastic"
Very reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley. Nice painting.
As a person with a strong bias towards blue, black and dark grey I found this image spellbinding and mesmerising. Many thanks.
Greetings from London.
PS: Word verification, 'gatica', 'little cat' in Spanish.
I definitely love this painting. I like the blues.
(poem by Therese L. Broderick of Albany, NY, USA. Poem based on the fact that the artist has created two versions of this illustration--one with red hair and blue streamers; another with blue hair and red streamers)
LILY, LILY
We know what will save us--a heart
white, open. And know why we cannot keep it
flowering for more than a day. A thought comes
red one morning, the lily watches ; thinking turns
blue by evening, the lily shifts. Our black vase
of unknowing is ever ready to catch the wilting
petals and leaves. Must we hold it? No. Yes.
On Giglio Island, surrounded by sea
a pretty young flower is waiting for me
There's only one like her
As such things should be
On Giglio Island, surrounded by sea
