Superb, but I'd want to write a novel to do that justice!
WHAT GLOBES KNOW
The contest here is not only between
the remains of this abandoned room
and three leafy trees growing
within the ruins
but also between
each of the trees: see how the tallest one
is winning--by luck
seeded directly beneath
a hole in the roof.
Now top branches scrape, widen
the blue gap in the ceiling,
making it all the easier
for any boy exploring this place
to conquer a tree by
climbing as high as possible,
surveying the province beyond,
imagining himself
a hero praised
in one line of an old book,
ignoring how small
that mapped blue globe is,
perched on wooden legs
far below him.
I've been here too long, I'm almost there. The light above beckons me. I'll grab a book on the way out.
Pages turn; aimlessly swirl
about empty halls
on an intruding draft,
their knowledge erased
by rain falling through
comet holes in a cathedral ceiling.
Names and faces, dates and places
seep through this broken library's
tiled floor, quenching the thirst
of persistent tree roots...
I live in the library--I just sleep at home.
I agree with Dave and Clay. This image has so much potential to inspire stories, and I, too, live at the library but have also nearly fallen asleep in one:)
Ah, what would we do without libraries and good ole books. I can't deny my being hooked on the internet (so much information, so little time) but reading the written word on a computer screen will never compare to reading a book and turning the page!
Almost fell asleep eh? What a riot you are WHY.
This image reminds of a Twilight Zone episode. Very haunting and, unfortunately, it might be a scene from a not too distant future:(
