SNOW AROUND LINCOLN CATHEDRAL

Ages before the cathedral's spire
blew down and its tower
collapsed, long before a fire
and then a rare earthquake
sent the stonemasons back to work,

an imp was blown by the wind
from the den of the Devil
through the portals of the church,
wreaking mishief within--
smashing tables and chairs,
tripping the Bishop;

and for his evil deeds, he was
turned to stone by an angel.
On top of one of the columns,
he sits there still, one leg
resting on the knee of the other,
wide-set eyes, heavy brows,

grotesque smile, ears and horns.
He laughs at the folly of men
who make angels in the snow.

What a beautiful image. Just why I love the winter season. Very magical:)

Stunning watercolor. The colors are perfect together.

Therese: I love the rhythm of the following line: "an imp was blown by the wind from the den of the Devil..."

A child asks the Bishop:
Why does God make it rain?
"The rain's God's tears
because God cries
when your sins cause Him pain."

A child asks the Bishop:
Does God make thunder, too?
"The thunder's when
God's angry from
the awful things you do."

A child asks the Bishop:
Why does God make it snow?
"Oh, bother with
this silliness.
Child, how am I to know?"

A child then tells the Bishop:
It's dandruff from God's head.
He's scratching it
In puzzlement
From all the lies you've said.
